Abstract

The High Moulouya basin contains abandoned mines (Zeida, Mibladen and Aouli) with no remediation. Around these ones, Pb-Zn mining wastes (dumps) are exposed to meteoric elements and are sources of heavy metal pollution of waters and soils. At Zeida, during flood periods of the Moulouya river, huge amounts of waste are eroded and transported over long distances. The morphological analysis by GIS of High Moulouya basin improves a good understanding of the extent and direction of the heavy metals pollution. Analysis of ASTER satellite images of the studied area and particularly around tailings has also been used to map the distribution of clay minerals considered as excellent traps of heavy metals that can slow down the advance of the pollution.
