In the high Ziz basin, especially in rural and semi-rural areas, access to drinking water is a key factor in economic development, improving the standard of living of populations and their stabilization. The objective of this study is to contribute to the search for areas suitable for the establishment of productive water wells by mapping potential areas for the storage of groundwater. It is based on the use of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) to cover the entire area (4360 km2). Data on five parameters influencing groundwater storage (rainfall, lithology, fracture rocks, slope and drainage) have been integrated into an empirical model, which was validated by using outflow data of wells and springs. Results show that the basin is potentially rich in ground water, since 60 of high Ziz basin has moderate to very high potential for groundwater storage. The model constitutes an important decision support tool since it allows identifying the different favorable zone drilling locations. © 2017 Universite Mohammed V, Institut Scientifique.
